The Island
The Island is the type of movie it is difficult to have an opinion about.
The story is good but the suspense fizzes out too soon leaving the ending rather obvious.
What needs special mention is the camera work and editing of action scenes. It is simply atrocious.
Motion blur and sweeping cuts are all right in small dozes but such rapid frame shifting? All the thrill was ruined because it felt like watching a paper-flicker movie, snap snap snap, and the character is somewhere else. Far removed from the smooth transitions of The Matrix.
The special effects are good but, somehow, not satisfactory. There are better stunts in XXX - State of the Union.
And the "two emotionally blank people discover sex" part was totally superflous but I guess Hollywood is having trouble keeping with the concept of an action movie without a romantic angle.
Tom Lincoln being bad and Lincoln 6 Echo being good was also tiresomely obvious.
Like I said, once Lincoln 6 Echo enters the Real WorldTM everything starts going downhill.
Scarlett Johansson looked and acted much better in Lost in Translation.
The Island has a predictable plot, humdrum characters, and some very bad camera work.
This is definitely not a movie worth the price of admission to a real theater. Check out the DVD and that is more than sufficient. This will be cheaper and more convenient.
